Thank you, for your opinion and I will not make any comment on it.
I just wanted to know if "Lilux-People" make the same Linux usage as I,
and so if Lilux was the right place for me ;). Ok it seems so.
Yes I use Linux as my mainly OS. The only purpose for using Windows
from time to time is gaming, that's all.
I have no special programming skills, I am only able to solve most
Linux problems that I can ecounter on my PC, if not, I can ask help ;)
In the last months, I am making some experiments with php, c++, apache,
but only for my personnal usage (as pastime), and it remains very basic.
Thank you
Best regards
pierre

Hi,
before starting, a preemtive remark:
all I say herein is my personal opinion, I'm not interested in
starting flamewars, i.e. no need to have huge discussions about
this.

Hello all!
I just wanted to now: How do you use Linux?
Both desktop and server, i.e. all tasks.
Do you have it installed on your personal
computer?
Yes, on most of them (exception being one machine - a DEC3000 - that's
not supported by Linux, where I run OpenBSD instead). There's also one
box with a dual-boot system, but that other (evil) OS wasn't booted in
ages.
Wich distribution do you use? Why?
I mostly use Debian GNU/Linux. I also used Slackware (my first, back
in 1995), SuSE (yup, I was a beginner too for a while), RedHat (still
used @work, because some software is only certified for that), IPCop
(nice little distro for routers), Gentoo (excellent packaging system),
Knoppix (rescue and demo system), and probably a few more that I
forget right now.
I settled on Debian because it's well supported (ok, commercial
support may be lacking, but I don't need much of that anyway), has
a good packaging system (seriously better than the RPM-based systems
I know about, such as SuSE, RedHat, Mandrake, but surpassed IMHO by
Gentoo's portage), has different flavours for different needs (stable
for servers, unstable for cutting edge, and testing in the middle for
stable-enough-but-not-totally-out-of-date systems), and a clear
philosophy.
For the record: I've used and use a few other operating systems as
well, such as the different DOS and Windows versions, OS/2, VMS (ok,
only a little), HP/UX, Solaris, IRIX, TOS (the good ol' Atari ST),
MacOS, FreeBSD, ...
Have you tried other distributions?
See above.
And perhaps: how long do you use Linux?
See above (since 1995, i.e. almost 10 years now).
thank you.
You're welcome.
Nice survey subject by the way - Pascal, maybe the results would be
something to write up & put onto the LiLux site?

My answer:
I have a dual boot XP-Mandrake 10.1 on my PC. Just bought the Mandrake
10.1 DVD, a few months ago. and i'm very satisfied with it.
I'm on Linux for about 2.5 years. and i never used an other distribution
than mandrake. And i don't plan to use a other in a close future.
So that's mainly desktop usage, I suppose?
