Ouch, I now understand even better why you saw those "strange"
setups with mailservers. T-Online is very well known to do
erm... things "their own way", even using modified protocols
(for instance, their POP3 server will identify you from your
dialup login, not from the parameters provided with the normal
POP3 dialog - at least it used to be that way).
You may have experienced one of the worst ISPs this side of
the atlantic. [ok, some others have really bad names too]
I can't say I've heard that kind of stories from Luxembourg
so far...
