Hi,
we are in the process of setting up a new web- and mailserver, and
consider switching from sendmail to another mail agent...
At the risk of launching a flamewar, which one would you recommend from
a security and maintainability point of view?

My vote goes to postfix. We're using it widely here at the office,
and we're quite happy with it. It's got all the features you need,
security, and plenty of speed. Last not least, it is well documented.

postfix system you could consider to give a little friday seminar on the

I held a course on Postfix at the LinuxDays. I already thought about
doing a presentation at one of coming LiLux Meetings on Thursday evening,
but we might also consider a tutorial.
The docs should be downloadable from linuxdays.lu (if those handouts have
finally been uploaded - got to check that).
Of course, if Yves wants to do a course himself, I'll happily hand the
task over ;-)

We use postfix

all our customers and are satisfied. Other solutions exists for IMAP
service on a system which has no login account for the users, but as it
is not the case on Sendar, I would recommand Postfix

a security and maintainability point of view?
I would also go for Postfix. Reasons:
- While Postfix is much easier to configure than Sendmail (no
sendmail.cf anymore), it tries to be compatible with Sendmail in some
ways: /etc/aliases, .forward, sendmail command and so on. As far as I
know, exim and qmail not not implement this and are not so well suited
as a "Sendmail drop in replacement"
- Postfix implements a very secure separate process architecture, where
every process works with limited rights.
