Hi,
As announced yesterday by M. J-L Schiltz, cable-TV will be fully
digital in Luxembourg as of jan. 1st 2008. What are the consequences
for people watching TV on their Linux-Computers and/or using Software
such as Freevo, Mythtv,...?
As connecting a std-alone decoder isn't really an option, what are the
other possibilities?
I know that actually Coditel uses Mediacypher to encrypt their network
and Imagin (Eltrona + Siemens) are using Cryptoworks. Simple (without
CI) DVB-C Tuners will not work because of this. Does anyone
successfully use cards like TechnoTrend-budget C-1500 (+ CI) or
TwinhanDTV Cab-CI (2033 Mantis) together with Technisat
Cryptoworks-CAM and an Imagin-Card in Linux (to watch Imagin)?
What about Coditel?

The aim of this is to bill every TV set instead of just each family:
most of the time, you pay for one or two TV-plugs, even if you installed
several tuners (TV, video recorders on tapes and/or on DVD, ...)
With this system, you will need a separate decoder for each device, and
you will have to pay a fee for each decoder.
They don't wish you to be able anymore to use PC-based tuners, whatever
OS you are running.
If you want to receive TV on your computer, you will need a dedicated
decoder (and annual fee related) and connect it to your card by RGB or
other non digital connection, I'm affraid...

*Officially*, Cable operators allready (want t) bill you for _each_
TV-set ! I know this because Coditel repeatedly asked how many TV sets
I have and they told me why.
It _seems_ they haven't been able (or haven't invested in the necessary
technology) to detect by themselves whether you have 1 or more TV sets
so far.
Now they won't really need to check...
And I'm certain the (.eu equivalent of the) MPAA will follow with more
locks, chains and bothers.
I get the feeling I'll do like a few of my friends... no more TV, just
DVDs, and more books, and more _human life_ !

I read that connecting several Dreamboxes with Linux-based firmware
(not the original ones) work great with a software-cam and only 1
chip-card by doing card-sharing.... however I'm not too much
interested in dreamboxes... I would prefer staying with Mythtv, 2-3
tuners in the server (with 2-3 chipcards of course if the price is
correct) and some small frontend boxes...
