Hi all,
I'm helping a friend who does web-development and is not very linux-aware to
administer his server. The server runs a suse 8.1 distro. I'm not used to the
suse way of package installation. Initially the server has been setup using
cds but we have no (easy) physical acces to it, so I wanted to configure yast
to download the rpms via ftp and manage dependencies to ease installation/
maintenance.
The problem is when I tell yast to use a ftp server with the directory which I
found on the suse webpages (e.g. ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/) I only
get an error message "No Installation source on installation media" .
Does anybody know how to setup yast on suse to work with ftp?

Jay, are you using a proxy server? If so, this may be your problem. There is
a work around to enable YAST to use a Proxy server, but if I remember
correctly, it varies from version to version. 8.2 has a proxy settings menu
in YAST --> network Services --> Proxy that should do the trick.

Some where in yast there must be a setting to tell which intsllation sources it uses,
however I don't remember exactly what it is called ;( Maybe some one knows the exact
term ?

If you are looking for a way to remotely install Suse distribution, I
confirm that (after long researchs) there is no such ressource on the
web, because it is forbidden by the terms of the licence of some
softwares contained in the CDs. No problem to use YOU (YaST On-line
Update), but no ways to install Suse from the web. Sorry.
You should instead try to find a set of Suse8.1 CDs.

That's incorrect. You won't get ISOs (at least of the x86 distribution)
because some software there is non-free. You *can* install via FTP,
without those parts - the free packages are all available on the
SUSE FTP server. There will be less problems for this in the future,
as Novell has decided to GPL yast - of course problems remain for
the proprietary third-party software included with the CDs/DVD.
Of course you'll need to boot from floppy and fetch the packages
from the network, which isn't too practical if you're on analog
or ISDN.
Note that you *can* download ISOs for some other architectures
(like Sparc, Alpha) - probably those proprietary packages are not
even available for those platforms.
You should instead try to find a set of Suse8.1 CDs.
No, find a set of SuSE 9.0 (or soon 9.1) CDs/DVDs ;-)

That's it! I already discovered the page bu didn't think it would be
easy to set up. Now I discovered there was a version also for suse8.1 ,
so I think I'll give it a try!

I'm not sure whether this is quite what you want, but if all you want is
to install/update packages, I believe YOU (Yast On-line Updater) could
be your friend?
Instead of trying to change the install source (I haven't tried that in
a long time), have you tried to simply use YOU? It's in the same
"window" as the "Change Source Of Installation" setting.

If I remeber right, the YaST in Suse 8.1 fails because the wget package
is missing in some configurations. I had this twice and it prevented me
at least to run YOU (YaST On-line Update) properly.
I found this by looking in the YaST logs, in /var/log/YaST2/*.log
As far as I know, YaST does not provide more dependency checks than RPM
command. It's just a graphical tool making the work easier.
I think this should help you.

Ah yes, this sounds logic. I will install wget manually (download via
ftp and rpm -i).
I don't know much about rpm, how does it compare to deb?
Would apt be better on package management than yast? Is there a way to
tell rpm to automatically solve dependencies? (haven't found such a
thing in the man) That's why I want to use a tool like yast, because
quite often there is a chain reaction and one has to install/upgrade
many packages.
I don't have the time right now to try it, but I'll try to install wget
first and if yast is still not working I will switch to apt4rpm (found
a howto on the net). I like that simple apt-get install package command
which I know from debian.
I want to avoid everything which involves replacing packages from the
base system. Therefore I don't want to upgrade the whole system. This is
a production system and if we lose the network connection for some
reason (e.g. having to reboot and the system doesn't come up again), we
probably will have complaining customers and we do have to ask for a
manual intervention from the isp (netline.lu). (many $s and takes time
during which the webpages will be offline).
I think I will find the time to check this out in a few days, I'll keep
you informed.

I have installed a debian only once. Thus I can't compare.

I would say that on a RPM-based system such as Suse, it would be better
to follow the RPM path... RPM updates a installation database, so if you
install packages an another way, you will probably have difficulties in
the future. Yast is not a replacement for RPM: it is just a more
intuitive interface running the same RPM command in the background.
Dependencies check are provided by RPM, not Yast.

If you install packages coming from the Suse 8.1 CDs, such a chain is
not likely to happen, especially if you just want to add some feature,
not a whole system such as the graphical user interface. The RPM
produces error messages providing the list of required packages. It is
not difficult then to install the required RPM first. I don't really see
the problem here. I could even assist you on-line if you have
difficulties, but once again, if you wish to use Yast (which is easier
and more intuitive than plain text rpm commands), you can as soon as you
put on-line (on a ftp server as example) the images of the Suse 8.1 CDs.
I thing this is the easiest way.
By the way, the company I'm working for is providing services based on
Suse Linux, we have the CD images on our ftp server (not anonymously
available from the Internet) and the competences to help you. If you
send me your mail address, I will ship you a demo CD called "Rencontrer
Plan-Net" that will provide you plently of information about us. It's
risk-free.
I don't have the time right now to try it, but
I'll try to install

Hi again,
Brent was right: yast depended on wget to work with ftp. It's now much
easier to handle packages. Also it's a good idea to use only packages
from the initial system whenever possible. I had the experience that
when I used stuff I found at rpmfind.net for ex. that I had to solve a
real chain reaction of dependencies. This is also true for debian, which
I use with all graphical bells and whistles on this machine, and apt is
very good on this, the system is in a state between stable and testing
and if I want a newer version of a program I simply type "apt-get
upgrade package" and everything is done automagically often pulling 10s
of MB of packages from the repository.
(I'm writing this from windows now, because I'm earning a few bugs
updating webpages for www.landesverband.lu and they use an awful cms
which relies on asp and a msword plugin, I hate it)
For Brent:
I'm not really involved professionnally with linux stuff, I'm only
helping a one-man firm which does web-development from time to time with
the more linux-specific issues. (I'm a EE student who needs to earn
money (only 9120 €/year from the ministry))
If you want to promote your services and send a cd, you can find my
friends address at www.aquariusmedia.lu. But I don't think he will
switch the provider once again, I think he is quite happy currently:
uptime > 400 days and once something works it does so permanently,
that's the linux way :-)
BTW I'm still looking for a job during summer vacation, so if somebody
would need a temporary helping hand which likes linux (among other
things) and knows how to use it....
I hope I didn't bother you too much with the personal stuff above. I'm
reading this mailing lists for a long while now and I'm happy that there
is a lug here and people who are promoting open source. I'd like to see
you once personnally at a meeting, but I'm too busy most of the time to
attend them. Also, I still have to pay my member fee for this year....

Sorry ? I though we were speaking about an already running Suse 8.1
system. Why should it reboot to install some suplementary software ?

The guy told -if I'm not wrong- that he whished to add some packages to
a Suse 8.1 system. Not update to Suse 9.0.

My experience was
* I had a friend running a Suse 8.1 system connected to the Internet
* I needed to re-install some packages, but I had a slow Internet
connection, and he didn't had the proper CD.
* I tried to find some Suse 8.1 server on the web to re-install those
packages without having to upload it to his system from mine (too slow).
I didn't found ANY ftp server proposing Suse 8.1 packages, and the ISO
images hosted by Suse didn't solved the problem neither (I don't
remember exactly why). I found however a text explaining why those
packages were removed from some ftp sites: because of Suse licence term.
So, I just tell my experience: to install some Suse 8.1 packages on a
system that has been installed using the commercial CDs, not the FTP ISO
images, you should fetch some Suse 8.1 CDs. I have such if you want. If
you have no access to the computer involved (quite risky, but...), then
you should share those ISO images on a file server having a fast
connection to the Internet.
