unfortunately it doesn't work; under suse 10 here is the sequence
gms:/home/mgms/programs/scjda-sp9316524 # iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

sit0 no wireless extensions.

eth1 no wireless extensions.

eth0 IEEE 802.11b ESSID:"Wireless" Nickname:"ipw2100"

so eth0 is the interface for wireless connection

mgms:/home/mgms/programs/scjda-sp9316524 # ifdown eth0
eth0 device: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter (rev 04)

eth0 configuration: wlan-id-00:04:23:77:53:2b
eth0 starting wpa_supplicant
Starting DHCP Client Daemon on eth0... . . . . . no IP address yet... backgrounding.

and after:

mgms:/home/mgms/programs/scjda-sp9316524 # iwconfig eth0 rate 11
mgms:/home/mgms/programs/scjda-sp9316524 # iwconfig eth0 essid Wireless

Try a ifdown before you do ifup. This might resetting the card. I have
experienced that sometimes cards become an unstable state and behave
strangely.
