Indeed, support for this must be compiled into the kernel -
which it normally isn't.

... possible, but usually also marked as *dangerous*.
You don't want to try this without having a full backup of
that partition, as you'll likely trash it.

experimental, or even dangerous? I haven't checked in the
most recent kernels, but none too long ago, it was still
considered dangerous. AFAIK slighlty modifying existing files
is +- safe, but otherwise you risk trashing the partition.
