You may be kidding, but actually, I have seen recommendations
for using Knoppix (or some derivative), and have the users
store their data to an USB stick.
No more admin nightmares... at least as far as the autoconfiguration
at Knoppix boot works :-p
For standardized hardware (can you say Playstation Knoppix?),
this could indeed work out.
