I have a 28.8 modem at home, so I don't even try to use gentoo there.  On my
laptop, I use the prebuilt backages when one is available (from the live CD) and
when not, then from source.  There are a few stupid things missing on the live
CD such as FTP and Telnet.  BIG OVERSIGHT in my opinion.  If you want the latest
and greatest, then source is always the way to go.
