You learn things every day... unfortunate though that they have

Hmm... good thing I have my folders elsewhere than under Inbox then.

Argh, indeed. I owe you at least one $Beverage! I'd seen that very
option in other clients (sylpheed I think), but hadn't noticed in
Mozilla.

In the meantime, I've tested evolution, which had some troubles
with my huge inbox (more than 1000 messages - I know Thierry, yours is
larger). The interface needs some getting used to (said nicely - not
everyone likes Outlook clones), but it seemed more or less functional.
Trying to move 4 messages simultaneously to another folder got it to
fold, though (version 1.0.5-1).

I'll have a look at mutt/pine & IMAP though (could often be useful),
and see about getting an interface in Notes that can work w/o Java
Applets...
