True, this worked, but it took me a whole week to figure it out. I 
suppose there must be tools who can cut this down to 10 seconds, such as 
the Sysinternals Filemon for Windows.

However, the general question remains as how to debug this kind of 
situation.
- gdb seems way too complex
- lsof wouldn't help, as the file cannot be opened in the first place
- strace seems interesting, I will investigate that further

Any other suggestions are still welcome.
